Doug Ford: Ontario's New Premier
From Businessman to Politician
The Rise of a Controversial Figure
Doug Ford, the brother of late Toronto mayor Rob Ford, has been elected premier of Ontario. A controversial figure known for his outspoken views, Ford is a former businessman and politician who has served as a member of the provincial parliament since 2018.
Born in Toronto in 1964, Ford is a self-described "blue-collar conservative." He inherited his family's printing business, Deco Labels, and later became involved in politics as a city councilor in Etobicoke. In 2014, he ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Toronto, but was elected to the provincial parliament four years later.
Ford's policies have been widely criticized by opponents, who accuse him of cutting social programs and slashing environmental regulations. However, he has also gained support among some voters who appreciate his straightforward style and his promises to reduce taxes and government spending.
