Ten Hag targeting first trophy for Red Devils
FA Community Shield: Manchester United v Manchester City - kick-off time, TV and live stream details
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is determined to make a winning start to his Old Trafford reign by claiming the FA Community Shield. The Dutchman, who replaced interim boss Ralf Rangnick at the end of last season, will take charge of his first competitive game for the Red Devils when they face Premier League champions Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
Ten Hag is keen to make a positive impression on the United faithful and is convinced that winning the Community Shield will provide the perfect springboard for the new campaign.
"I think it's always important to win trophies," said Ten Hag. "It's a good start for the season and it gives you a good feeling when you win a trophy. I think it's important for the players, for the staff, for the club, for the fans, and for everyone involved with Manchester United."
United have a good record in the Community Shield, having won the competition 21 times, more than any other club. However, they have not won the trophy since 2016 and will be keen to end their drought against their rivals.
Manchester City are the reigning Premier League champions and will be looking to make a statement of intent by winning the Community Shield for the third time in four years. Pep Guardiola's side will be a tough test for United, but Ten Hag is confident that his team can get the job done.
"We know that Manchester City is a great team," said Ten Hag. "They have a lot of quality players and a great coach. But we have also a lot of quality players and we have a good team. I think it will be a close game, but I am confident that we can win."
The FA Community Shield is the traditional curtain-raiser to the new English football season and is contested between the winners of the Premier League and the FA Cup. This year's match will be played at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, July 31, and will kick off at 3pm.
