VIDEO: WSP increasing presence after carjackings
Washington State Patrol increasing presence along I-5
The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is increasing its presence along Interstate 5 in response to a recent spate of carjackings. In the past two weeks, there have been at least six carjackings along the freeway, including one in which a woman was shot and killed.
WSP Chief John Batiste said the agency is deploying additional troopers to the area and is working with local law enforcement agencies to increase patrols. He said the agency is also working to identify and apprehend the suspects involved in the carjackings.
Tips to avoid being a victim of carjacking
The WSP is urging drivers to be aware of their surroundings and to take steps to avoid becoming a victim of carjacking. Here are some tips:
- Be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to people and vehicles around you.
- Park in well-lit areas and avoid parking next to large vehicles or vans.
- Keep your car doors locked and windows rolled up when you are driving or parked.
- Never leave valuables in your car.
- If you are approached by someone who demands your car, do not resist. Give them the car and report the incident to the police immediately.
Anyone with information about the recent carjackings is asked to contact the WSP at 1-800-222-4700.
